SAP HANA is based on an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database-management system. A key goal of SAP HANA is to reduce redundancies. It consolidates OLTP (OnLine Transaction Processing) and OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) into HTAP (Hybrid Transaction / Analytic Processing).
Cutting-edge technologies in the development of on-board caches enable data transfer between memory and CPU cores to be significantly accelerated. Nowadays, many computers usually have a multi-core architecture in combination with a very large main memory. SAP HANA makes use of this and parallelises all its tasks over multiple cores. This is known as parallelisation.
With SAP HANA, you can now store your entire database in memory. This is due to the high compression rate of the data. As a result, the data footprint of even the largest databases is reduced down to a fraction of their original size. This eliminates the old bottleneck of constant swapping of data from your persistence layer all the way up to your memory and then to your CPU for further processing. Thus, no disk movement is required to store the data and there is no need for constant data exchange.
